FEATURED COMMENTARIES:

Anti-inflammatory and Immunomodulatory Mechanism of Tanshinone IIA for Atherosclerosis

By: Zhuo Chen and Hao Xu

In the early 1990s, Dr. Ross proposed the chronic inflammation hypothesis of atherosclerosis (AS). He further clearly regarded AS as an inflammatory disease in 1999. With more and more inflammatory cells and mediators constantly being detected, AS is no longer considered a simple disease of lipid deposition onto the arterial wall, but instead a progressive inflammatory response within the vessel wall.

A Monocyte/Macrophage-Based Model for Studying Immunopathology Relevant For Diagnostics and Drug Development for Atherosclerosis

By: Alexander Orekhov, Nikita Nikiforov, Natalia Elizova, Ekaterina Ivanova and Vsevolod Makeev

Immunopathology plays a central role in many human diseases, including atherosclerosis, and its comprehensive diagnosis may be very important for the therapy. However, current methods of immunopathology assessment can reveal only gross alterations of the immune state. Moreover, no drugs are currently available for adequate modulation of the immune response in such pathologies as atherosclerosis.

Beyond Curcumin: Anti-atherosclerotic Effect of Turmeric

By: Vishal Singh and Manoj Kumar Barthwal

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease of the arterial wall which is polygenic in nature. It involves several interconnected perturbations including dyslipidemia, inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and platelet activation. Since atherosclerosis is considered a lifestyle disorder and develops over many years, its long-term management can hold the key for successful prevention and therapy. Therefore, incorporation of functional foods in the daily diet may help manage the disease better.

Atherosclerosis, Chronic Kidney Disease, and Cathepsin S

By: José Luiz Figueiredo and Elena Aikawa

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which characterizes by extensive remodeling of the extracellular matrix in the arterial wall. Arterial inflammation is the key aspect of the formation and progression of atherosclerotic lesions. However, other molecular mechanisms are involved in the response to the injury of the vascular wall and development of atherosclerosis.
